Commissioning

The Client

Founded in 1981 and headquartered in Danvers, Massachusetts, ABIOMED, Inc. is a pioneer and global leader in healthcare technology and innovation. Since inception, ABIOMED has maintained its mission of “recovering hearts and saving lives” by focusing its efforts on developing ground-breaking technologies designed to assist or replace the life-sustaining pumping function of a failing heart. ABIOMED’s portfolio offers healthcare professionals an array of products and services across a broad clinical spectrum, from the world’s first total replacement heart to the world’s smallest heart pump.

The Project

ICO provided comprehensive Commissioning Services for the build-out of 160,000 square feet of new cleanroom environments and 200,000 square feet of office, cafeteria, and laboratory space within ABIOMED’s Danvers campus. Physical equipment included heating hot water boiler plants, rooftop units, humidification and dehumidification systems. ICO’s focus was on understanding and executing the design concept by reviewing applicable submittals, inspecting the work performed by contractors, and commissioning the project to ensure all systems were integrated and operating as intended—including 100% of the critical HVAC equipment. ICO also performed witness testing of selected electrical equipment to ensure proper function under emergency and loss-of-power conditions.
